Inspired to delve deeper into the tale, having been in the process of reading Moby Dick for over 5 years, and simultaneously seeking a way to ensure I would sit down and paint every day, I accepted Breon's challenge.
"Why not do 100 paintings on the pages of Moby Dick? One a day."
I draw inspiration from a word or a few lines on the page and go from there.
Welcome to my imagination on Melville.

Breon Bliss and I love to collaborate. He sketches regularly and I often paint color into his sketches. He'll come back in with ink and colored pencil to add detail and shading.
This first portrait is a digital collaboration, made using the Sketch Club app. We took turns adding lines of texture until this face was ready to meet the world.
The second portrait is a layered collaboration. I took the photograph of my cousin’s beloved dog Sally. Breon sketched out a line drawing from the photo. I added watercolor. Breon finished with details and highlights in colored pencil.
The third is a collaboration we co-created on our third date! We learned through sketching and conversation that we both grew up drawing mushroom houses for fun. I often would draw a cross section of an interior: a detailed and fanciful home for ladybugs or ants, and Breon did both interiors and exteriors, for his signature Teddy Bear mice. So, we combined and came up with this.
I also occasionally collaborate on Breon's commissioned pet portraits. You can find more of his pet portraiture by clicking HERE.

I bought 3 cans of spray paint in each country I visited on a cycle/train trip through England, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and France, and brought swell dogs to the cities of Bristol, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Gent, and Paris.

One of the last stops on our honeymoon was the National Portrait Gallery in London. Having not sketched nearly as much as I'd hoped I would have up to that point on our holiday, I walked around and practically filled a little moleskine journal with quick blind contour studies of portraits that caught my eye.
Here they are.
Drawn while while looking at the subject, not at the page.
Sometimes I stop drawing and reset my pen, and then look back up before beginning a new line.
I can't get enough of these!
The process lets me to loosen up and really focus on my subjects, and the results are funky surprises which still manage to convey something true and recognizable.
